Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum)
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 8 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) care in an acute care hospital setting. The role involves comprehensive maternal and newborn care with a focus on labor and delivery management, postpartum care, and neonatal support.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience in Labor and Delivery nursing (higher value confirmed)
- Community hospital experience preferred
- First-time travelers not accepted
- Prior travel experience not explicitly required
Work Schedule
- Weekend rotation: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays every 6 weeks
- Holiday shifts: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day)
- On-call: 2 mandatory on-call shifts per 6-week schedule
- No block scheduling accommodation
- No local candidates accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility)
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Patient Ratios: 1 nurse to 1-3 patients
- Unit: Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) model
- Patient volume: Facility births fewer than 100 per month
- Care settings include antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and Level I nursery
- Full couplet care required (mother and baby)
- RN expected to float within scope to cover triage, c-section cases (including circulating), antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and some gynecology surgical cases (hysterectomies/mastectomies)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not explicitly required
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) or FHM certification required
- Additional preferred: AWHONN Advanced or Intermediate
Required Skills & Competencies
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: blood administration, venous blood draws, peripheral IV insertion and maintenance, infusion pump use
- Labor and delivery management: amnioinfusion, assist vaginal delivery, circulate for c-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, sterile vaginal exams
- Medication administration: antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline
- Neonatal care: cord blood collection, infant ID/security banding, circumcision assistance and care, car seat education, metabolic screening, newborn assessment, phototherapy, thermoregulation
- Antepartum care: NST (Non-Stress Tests), reflex and edema assessments, triage of obstetrical patients, use of external fetal monitoring
- Postpartum care: breastfeeding/lactation support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, fundus/lochia/perineum care, wound assessment, baby-friendly protocols
- Surgical procedures: D&C, tubal ligation, post-op gynecology care (hysterectomy)
- Pain management: epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, PCA use
- Fetal monitoring: recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, spiral electrode placement, internal fetal monitoring, intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) use
- Professional skills: isolation precautions, PPE use, vaccine administration
Preferred Skills
- Assist with high-risk deliveries
- Scrub for c-sections
- Neonatal resuscitation and APGAR scoring
- Assist with sterile speculum exams
- Cervical cerclage assistance
- Infant/neonatal arrest response and rapid response team participation
Facility & Documentation Requirements
- Acute care hospital with 74 staffed beds
- Charting system: Epic
- Scrub color: Navy (provided)
- Parking: Free
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab float assignments
- Professional license primary source verification (Missouri licenses via NURSYS)
- Drug testing within 1 year, must include standard panels and not expire during assignment
- Physical exam within 1 year
- Fit mask (N95) testing and annual renewal required
- Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
- Tdap (Tdap vaccine or declination)
- TB testing (2 negative PPDs or equivalent)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or declination)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or exemption required during flu season
- Unit-specific competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency testing
- Color blindness testing within 12 months
- Skills checklist within 1 year
- References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
- Employment application required
- Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
- Orientation modules (~16 hours) required prior to start, unless completed within last 6 months at the facility system
Additional Notes
- No pending licenses accepted
- Return to work restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed minimum hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
- Candidate must be able to meet weekend, holiday, and on-call requirements
- Must be willing to float within the LDRP unit scope as needed
