Registered Nurse - MedSurg/Telemetry
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights
Patient Ratio: 1:6
Scheduling: Preferred scheduling; travelers work every other weekend; floating required to other MedSurg/Telemetry areas including possible COVID care units. Floating may be frequent.
Orientation: 36 hours
Unit Details:
- 42 daily census, 43 rooms/beds
- Care primarily for stroke patients and various neuro diagnoses including epilepsy, neurosurgery, subdural hematomas
- 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with optional training for travelers
- Unit systems include PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
- Navy scrubs required
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience
- MedSurg/Telemetry experience within the last year (at least 1 year)
- Completion of 2 or more travel assignments
- Proficient in interpretation of dysrhythmias
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
Job Expectations
- No return-to-office (RTO) after booking allowed; call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation
- Floating to other MedSurg/Telemetry units and COVID care units required
- If weekend shifts are missed, they must be made up either the same week or at the end of the contract
- Block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Must work 36 or 48 hours per week
Required Background and Health Documentation
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, education verification, and state-specific healthcare registry searches required within 90 days prior to start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
- Fit mask testing required (N95 or PAPR training acceptable; PAPR not accepted at some locations)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
- Immunizations and titers required for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31)
Additional Requirements
- Must complete facility-specific orientation and education modules including medication safety, confidentiality agreement, and annual compliance training
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8-10 hours for acute care)
- Navy scrubs required onsite
- Must provide a passport-style photo for badge creation prior to start
- Floating and flexibility to work in various MedSurg/Telemetry and neuro units including COVID care
Summary
This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced MedSurg/Telemetry Registered Nurse with neuro experience, working 12-hour night shifts in a neuro-focused unit with a 1:6 patient ratio. Prior travel experience with at least two completed contracts is mandatory. The role requires strong telemetry and dysrhythmia skills, flexibility to float, and adherence to strict attendance and scheduling policies. Comprehensive background checks, health screenings, and certifications are required before starting.
