Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a secure corrections health unit environment with locked access controlled by Corrections Officers.
- Float between Oncology Medical-Surgical (MS) and Progressive Care Unit (PCU) as needed.
- Shifts include 12-hour day/night rotating schedule; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but not guaranteed.
- Oncology experience preferred but not required.
- EPIC charting experience is required.
Patient Population & Care Focus
- Patients with active oncology diagnoses/treatments (solid tumors, hematology).
- Oncology workup admissions and history of cancer admitted for other reasons (e.g., surgical procedures, COPD, sepsis).
- Non-oncology diagnoses as well.
- Nurse to patient ratio: 1:3 in PCU, 1:4-5 in MS.
- Corrections environment with CO to inmate ratio 1:2.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care on Oncology MS and PCU units.
- Ensure staff safety in a corrections unit setting.
- Cardiac monitoring and telemetry management including dysrhythmia interpretation.
- Manage IV insulin protocols, feeding tubes, hemodialysis care, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, PICC line management, and IV starts.
- Manage respiratory support including CPAP/BIPAP, High Flow Nasal Cannula, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and oxygen therapy.
- Support interdisciplinary teams including pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory services, social services, and rapid response teams.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience with EPIC electronic health record system.
- Proficiency in IV insulin protocols.
- Experience with pre/post hemodialysis and renal failure management.
- PICC line management skills.
Experience
- Oncology experience preferred but not mandatory.
- No prior travel experience required.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS required.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
- Unit-specific competency exams required.
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required prior to start.
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 90 days of start.
- Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring required.
- Education accreditation verification required for nursing degree (accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
- Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting must be completed with specific code and within 1 year of start; new fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days.
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
- Tdap vaccination (adult dose) required.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer required.
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer required unless medically exempt.
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed).
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31).
- COVID vaccination not required but recommended.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership.
- Employment application and skills checklist required.
- Annual acknowledgment of dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies.
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually.
