Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing care including:

• Executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders
• Dispensing and administering medications
• Assisting providers in examinations and treatment of patients (inmate/resident population)
• Applying nursing and supervisory techniques in care, treatment, and referrals
• Performing technical/clinical procedures within scope of education and licensure
• Attending sick calls with physicians and preparing inmates/residents for examination
• Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting per policy
• Examining and assessing inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries and referring as needed
• Performing emergency procedures and notifying providers for treatment orders
• Coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate
• Supervise and guide licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff
• Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies
• Use sound independent judgment while following corporate, facility, and correctional policies
• Evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication
• Maintain confidentiality and security of medical records
• Assist with review of medical files to ensure documentation of services
• Monitor potential catastrophic illnesses closely
• Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence and comply with pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances
• Observe and record inmate/resident behavior
• Inspect medical unit for contraband and safely store or dispose of supplies and equipment
• Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups
• Assist with preparation and maintenance of medical records, reports, and logs
• Interpret medical and technical procedures, regulations, and legal documents
• Respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings as necessary
• Facilitate accreditation processes (NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO) by providing efficient and appropriate medical services
• Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports and take action in serious incidents or emergencies

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Arizona
• Graduate from an accredited nursing program with a degree or diploma in nursing
• Valid driver’s license
• Minimum 1 year of professional nursing experience (preferred)
