Job Opportunity: Cyto Tech

Location: Newport News, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (5x8 hours), 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Hours per Week: 40


Job Description

  • Position: Cytotechnologist (Cyto Tech)
  • Must have inpatient hospital laboratory experience

Required Qualifications

  • ASCP certification required
  • Minimum 1 year of Cytotechnologist experience within the last year
  • Experience in an inpatient setting required
  • Valid and current state license for Cytotechnologist
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Valid driver’s license required (for all Home Health & Hospice positions; note this is a hospital inpatient role)

Required Certifications & Competencies

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification (AHA, ARC, Military, or American Safety & Health Institute; online CPR not accepted)
  • Other certifications (ACLS, PALS, NRP, EFM) not specifically required unless unit description states otherwise
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable, to be completed within one year of start date
  • Pass/Fail testing (e.g., EKG/Medication) administered during orientation

Background & Health Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within one year of start, updated annually
  • Fingerprinting per Virginia State Police National Criminal Background Check (effective 7/15/2025)
  • Physical exam within last 12 months
  • Drug screen within last 12 months
  • TB screening: Negative 2-step PPD or QGold/T-Spot within 12 months; if positive, clearance letter required
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or documented exemption for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines, titer, or history of chickenpox)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (10/1–3/31) with strict documentation deadlines; medical or religious exemptions accepted with approval
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Documentation & Compliance

  • I-9 verification required
  • E-Verify required
  • Photo for badge: recent, professional headshot meeting specific facility guidelines
  • Confidentiality agreement, dress code policy, scrub color policy, safety brochure, drug-free policy, and hand washing hygiene policy must be reviewed and signed prior to start

  • References: 2 professional references required
