Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit & Patient Population

  • Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit with 20 beds, including orthopedic patients (Total Knee and Hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases).
  • Patient diagnoses include pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
  • Unit split by floors:
    • 7th floor: Medical/Surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia), secured floor.
  • Must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients; safety and de-escalation training provided.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratios:
    • Days: 1:5
    • Nights: 1:6 (rarely 1:7)

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

  • Frequent floating required to meet hospital staffing needs, including potential float to other units and campuses.
  • Drip medication administration required on all floors.
  • EPIC electronic charting experience required.
  • Must be prepared to float within scope to various units (e.g., Neuro, Trauma, Observation, Specialty units).
  • Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat).
  • Holiday work requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted if in hand before start; otherwise, booking delayed 6 weeks).
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted unless 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS and CPI certifications preferred.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.

Facility & Work Environment

  • 100% nicotine-free facility.
  • Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation).
  • Parking: Permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates.
  • RTO (Request Time Off): Up to 2 weeks allowed; must be submitted with application; additional requests at manager discretion.
  • Locals not accepted (must live more than 100 miles from facility).
  • Government-issued photo ID required.

Compliance & Screening Requirements

  • Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and nationwide checks.
  • SAM and OIG checks required within 30 days of start and monthly thereafter.
  • State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required.
  • Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required prior to start.
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start and updated annually (instant tests not accepted).
  • Physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+) required within 1 year and updated annually.
  • Immunizations and health documentation required:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Annual PPD or equivalent TB testing
    • MMR (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal)
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters if low/equivocal)
    • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
    • COVID vaccine preferred (medical/religious exemption or declination accepted)
  • Annual skills checklist required.
  • Two professional references from the past 2 years required.
