Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Medical Surgical
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours: 36 or 48 hours accepted
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics, general med/surg patients
- Daily Census: Approximately 43 patients
- Target Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6-7
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Work: Must be able to work holidays
- Call Requirement: Call required if assigned a prescheduled on-call shift
- Float Requirement: Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatient holding
- Special Assignments:
- Assigned to Inclement Weather Team
- Assigned to Storm/Hurricane Team; may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty, or disaster
- Charge Nurse Role: Required for night travelers
Experience & Skills Requirements
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years (highest required)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; 1st time travelers accepted
- Required Skills:
- EPIC experience required
- Ability to manage insulin and heparin drips
- Required Certifications:
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- Preferred Skills/Certifications:
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
- Charge nurse experience
Clinical & Unit Details
- Patient Diagnoses: General medical/surgical adult and geriatric patients
- Special Procedures:
- Insulin drips
- Heparin drips
- Wound VAC dressing changes
- High flow oxygen therapy
- Occasional short-term BiPAP respiratory support (no additional training required)
- Unit Systems:
- PYXIS (medication system)
- EPIC (documentation)
- SBAR (communication)
Orientation & Training
- Unit Orientation: 24 hours
- Additional Requirements:
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
- Must complete medication safety training and other facility-specific education modules
- Assigned to complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8 hours) if applicable
- Must complete flu vaccination or provide approved exemption documentation during flu season
- Background checks and health screenings required (including TB test, immunizations, drug screening)
- Photo for badge required prior to start
- Must complete competency exams including Dysrhythmia/EKG exam with a passing score of 82% or higher
Important Notes
- RTO (Return to Office) Policy: No RTO after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation and Do Not Rehire status
- COVID-19: Possible exposure to COVID patients
- Scrubs: Not provided; Navy color recommended
- Scheduling: Based on unit needs with preferences relayed to management
