Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Description

  • Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Patient Ratios: Average 1:2
  • Required Years of Experience: 3 years
  • First-time travelers: Not accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Must float within scope to other pediatric units as needed (Pediatric ED, NNICU, inpatient departments, psychiatric unit)
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Special Requirements: Experience in cardiac critical care preferred; CRRT and ECMO certifications preferred

Certifications Required

  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) recommended
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., TNCC for ER, NRP for NICU)

Compliance & Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months of start, updated annually

  • Education verification required, including foreign equivalency for internationally educated nurses
  • State license primary source verification required within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required within 30 days of start

Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (85% passing score) within 12 months of start
  • Color Blind Testing required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024 or later (80% passing score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for ICU and telemetry units (not required for PICU)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation required
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties (declination accepted)
  • Required immunizations or titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

    • Stroke Education (not required for PICU)
    • CLABSI Prevention
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Language Services
    • CAUTI Education (not required for PICU)

    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER)
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • Blood Administration (except Behavioral Health, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
    • eCart Training (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
    • Chaperone Policy Training
  • EPIC testing or training required for RNs with prior EPIC experience

Work History & Experience Verification

  • 7-year work history with no gaps greater than 90 days required
  • Verification of last 7 years of employment required for all start dates on/after 8/2/2024
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start

Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
  • Floating assignments require flexibility to work in various pediatric units while staying within scope of practice.
  • Weekend work is required every other weekend.

This position is ideal for experienced PICU Registered Nurses with at least 3 years of specialty experience, who are comfortable floating within pediatric units and meeting comprehensive compliance and training requirements.
