Patient Care Information

  • Patient Types: Adults with various diagnoses including:
    • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
    • Acute Renal Failure (ARF)
    • Hepatitis
    • End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD)
    • Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
    • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
    • Pneumonia
    • Sepsis
    • Gastrointestinal (GI) bleed
    • Syncope
    • Chest pain
    • Pulmonary emboli
    • Respiratory failure
    • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
    • Arrhythmias
    • Seizure disorders
    • Overdose
    • Delirium tremors

Staffing Ratios

  • RN:
    • PCU/Tele: 1:4 (Days & Nights)
    • Med/Surg: 1:5 (Days & Nights)
  • CNA: 1:8 (Days & Nights)

Required Experience and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN):
    • Minimum Experience: 1 year (greater than 2 years for first-time travelers)
    • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN):
    • Minimum Experience: 1 year (Telemetry experience required)
    • Required Certifications: BLS (ACLS preferred)
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA):
    • Required: Certification as a CNA, BLS not required

Skills and Responsibilities

  • RN:
    • Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration
    • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
    • IV starts and blood product administration
    • CIWA, drain/tube management
    • Insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA)
    • Effective communication and strong clinical judgment
  • LPN:
    • Acute care Telemetry experience
    • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
    • IV starts and blood product administration
    • Wound care
  • CNA:
    • Professional bedside manner and adaptability

Support on the Unit

  • Charge nurse available 24/7
  • Phlebotomy services available 24/7
  • Resource Nurse available as staffing allows
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage 24/7

Orientation and Scheduling

  • Orientation: 2 days of in-class/online education followed by 2 shifts with a preceptor
  • Scheduling:
    • Weekend rotation: Every other or 50% weekends
    • Holiday expectations: Every other holiday minimum
    • Time off approval: Up to 7 days, with specific restrictions during peak times
