Registered Nurse - PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit)

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse in the PACU is responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the immediate post-anesthesia period. This includes assessing patients, developing and implementing individualized care plans, and collaborating with healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Care is provided to patients ranging from pediatric through geriatric.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to immediate post-anesthesia and post-procedure patients.
  • Perform initial and ongoing physical assessments upon admission to PACU.
  • Assess patient’s physical, social, behavioral, and mental status through observation, interview, and medical record review.
  • Develop individualized plans of care to assist patients in safely recovering from anesthesia.
  • Monitor surgical sites, drains, dressings, tubes, catheters, and intravenous lines.
  • Monitor and intervene to maintain respiratory and circulatory function.
  • Utilize critical thinking for patient assessment and emergency interventions.
  • Provide psychosocial support and health teaching to patients and families.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately.
  • Act as a patient advocate and collaborate with the healthcare team to revise care plans as needed.
  • Evaluate patient pain and provide therapeutic measures to ensure comfort.
  • Assess discharge readiness and reinforce patient education.

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Minimum 2 years of PACU (Post Anesthesia Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

  • None specified.

Additional Information

  • Experience managing clinical skills including symptom identification, disease management, medication administration, and infection control.
  • Ability to maintain physiological homeostasis and intervene appropriately during emergencies.
  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills.
