Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Operating Room (Travel/Contract)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract


Position Details

  • Specialty: Operating Room Registered Nurse
  • Shift:
    • 3x12 hour day shifts (06:45 AM - 07:15 PM) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays
    • Every third weekend includes a night shift (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: 1 weekend per month
  • Rooms: 23 operating rooms
  • Experience Required: Minimum 3 years of OR experience
  • First-timers: Not accepted
  • On-call: Yes, approximately 1 per week (though less frequent recently)
  • Floating: Rarely, only within skill set to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Locals: Not accepted; must live at least 50 miles from facility
  • Licensure: Must have active Illinois nursing license or be in the application process

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - Required
  • CNOR and CST - Preferred
  • ACLS, PALS - Required based on unit/specialty (AHA or RQI acceptable)

Clinical Requirements & Experience

  • Service Lines: Will work with all except Cardiovascular (CV)
  • General OR & Trauma: Level I trauma experience required
  • Cerner: Experience preferred
  • Bariatric Cases: Laparoscopic assisted cases
  • General Surgery: Appendectomy, Cholecystectomy, Colon resection, Hernia repair (inguinal/umbilical), Laparoscopic assisted procedures, Mastectomy, Thyroidectomy (partial/total), Whipple procedure
  • Neurology: Cervical fusion, Craniotomy, Laminectomy/discectomy, Lumbar fusion
  • Orthopedics: Arthroscopy, Carpal Tunnel release, Closed and Open reduction of fractures
  • Plastic Surgery: Free Flap - Microvascular
  • Transplant: Organ donation
  • Urology: Cystoscopy, Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy
  • Trauma: Amputations, Gunshot/stab wounds, Motor Vehicle Accidents (multiple injuries)
  • Emergency Management: Code response, Fire safety, Latex allergy management, Malignant Hyperthermia
  • Equipment/Instrumentation: Electrosurgical units, Fiber optic light sources/cords, Hana tables
  • Professional Skills: Administration of blood products, Infection control, Radiation safety, Specimen handling/labeling, Universal Protocol (Time out) procedure, Urinary bladder catheterization

Time Off & Scheduling

  • All requested time off must be approved by manager
  • Client may call off up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay obligation
  • On-call shifts count as called-off shifts if used in lieu of cancellation

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Valid US Driver’s License or State ID
  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years (including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, FACIS Level 3)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks within 30 days prior to start
  • Illinois-specific registry and offender searches as required
  • Education verification (degree/transcript/diploma)
  • State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Badge photo (color, plain background) required before start
  • Code of Conduct acknowledgment
  • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella (vaccines, titers, or declinations)
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • References: 2 professional references required for clinical candidates
  • Skills checklist required for clinical candidates

This position is ideal for experienced OR nurses with trauma and general surgery expertise who are open to travel assignments and meet Illinois licensure requirements.
