Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Salisbury, North Carolina
Facility: Cardiac and Stroke Unit (Novant Health Rowan Medical Center)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
- Hours: 36 hours can be offered
- Call Requirement: Yes, frequency depends on patient census
- Float Requirement: Yes
- Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend, plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period
- Target Patient Ratios: 1:5-6 (travelers must be comfortable with up to 6 patients)
- Unit Orientation: 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during the first week for hospital orientation
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with leadership oversight; NO BLOCK SCHEDULING allowed
- RTO (Return to Office) Policy: Maximum 7 days auto-offer; no RTO after booking and no onsite work out of RTO
Unit & Patient Details
- Unit Type: Primary cardiac and stroke unit
- Patient Diagnoses:
- Stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, cardiac catheterization, TR bands
- Post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular/cardiac interventions without sheaths
- Non-rebreather mask patients with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox)
- Unstable angina, low-risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias
- All new CVA (stroke), TIA patients
- Special Procedures:
- Titration of Cardizem drips
- Fast-paced unit with 78-90 patient turnovers weekly
- Team lead assists with admissions and discharges
- COVID-19: Unit currently houses COVID-positive patients requiring opti-flow and BIPAP (chronic use only)
- Special Equipment: Telemetry, pulse oximetry, high flow O2 (stable), non-rebreather mask (palliative only), BIPAP (chronic use only)
- Restrictions: No new BIPAP, no unstable O2 with BIPAP, no respiratory rate >35, no non-rebreather with unstable O2
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years nursing experience in a similar high-acuity, high-ratio unit
- Experience with IV starts, telemetry, pre- and post-procedure patients, cardiac patients, cardiac drips, PCI
- Comfortable managing 6 patients in a fast-paced environment
- Willing to accept first-time travelers
- Locals accepted
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification
- Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start
Compliance & Background Requirements
- Criminal background check within 90 days for all locations lived in the last 7 years
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 90 days
- Education verification for highest degree earned (pending allowed for RNs with valid license)
- State-specific searches for North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry and Division of Medical Assistance within 90 days
- Drug testing within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (updated annually if past positive TB)
- Fit mask testing required (N95 or PAPR training)
- Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form if titer negative), Flu vaccine or approved exemption (seasonal)
- TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray and physician-signed TB questionnaire required annually
Additional Requirements
- Navy blue or white scrubs (jackets must match material and color)
- Must complete various facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreement, hospital policies, medication safety, and orientation modules
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (approx. 8 hours) prior to start
- Must upload a passport-style photo for badge creation prior to start
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years for travel and acute care positions
- Must complete medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required with a minimum score of 82% (3 attempts allowed)

- This is a challenging, very busy unit requiring comfort with high patient turnover and acuity
- No block scheduling allowed
- Travelers must be prepared for a fast-paced environment and flexible scheduling including call and float duties
- COVID-positive patients are currently housed on the unit, requiring experience with respiratory support devices
This position is ideal for experienced cardiac/stroke RNs comfortable with telemetry, cardiac drips, and a fast-paced environment who are flexible with scheduling and call requirements.
