Operating Room Registered Nurse – Travel/Contract
Location: Patchogue, New York
Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse for night shifts. The unit primarily handles vascular, orthopedic, and robotic surgical cases. Candidates must be proficient in at least two of these three areas. Weekend coverage is typically 1-2 weekends per month depending on patient volume. Flexibility is essential; on-call duties are optional and not required.

- Podiatry (e.g., Bunionectomy, Ankle fusion)
- Robotics (e.g., Da Vinci Xi Surgical System cases)

Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Minimum 5 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience in an Acute Care setting
- Trauma experience
- Proficiency with Epic electronic documentation system
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for New York State
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA only) required
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred (AHA only)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred but not required
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) required for Emergency Room roles (not specifically stated as required here)
- Stroke-related CEUs required annually (facility is stroke accredited)
- Pass/Fail Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for applicable units
- IV Certification if applicable
Schedule & Workload
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each
- Weekend coverage: 1-2 weekends per month, depending on patient volume
- No mandatory on-call, but optional on-call may be available
- Flexibility in scheduling is essential
- Limited pre-approved time off (1 request per contract)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including multi-level searches (state, county, nationwide, international if applicable)
- Education verification confirming nursing degree
- NY State license verification and hard copy with green border required before start
- Drug screening per standard 9-panel test within 1 year of start
- Harassment prevention training certificate (New York specific) required annually
- Physical exam and general health assessment within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Fit mask test (N95) within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers with vaccination if needed
- Hepatitis B positive titer or declination
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption by November 1
- References: Two manager/supervisor references required (charge nurse references generally not accepted)
- Employment history verification for the past 7 years
- Skills checklist updated annually
Additional Notes
- The unit uses Omnicell medication system
- In-house anesthesia coverage 24/7 (CRNA, Anesthesiologist)
- The facility does not accept first-time travelers with less than 5 years OR experience
- Several facility-specific documents and acknowledgments must be completed prior to or at orientation (e.g., Code of Conduct, Privacy & Confidentiality Agreement, Drug-Free Workplace Policy)
- Orientation includes mandatory competency exams and safety training modules completed via Relias platform
- Photo ID for badge must meet specific requirements (color photo, plain background, no filters, etc.)
This position is ideal for experienced OR RNs with strong surgical proficiency, flexibility for night shifts and weekends, and the ability to meet rigorous credentialing and compliance standards.
