Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Job Description

• Unit: General Medicine, caring for medicine patients
• Floating assignments may include other med/surg units and telemetry
• Open to first-time travel nurses

Required Experience & Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of inpatient nursing experience required
• Certifications required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – mandatory
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred
  • NIH certification – preferred

Required Licensure

• Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Louisiana

Background & Compliance Requirements

• I-9 with supporting documentation required
• Valid government-issued photo ID required (name must match all documentation)
• Criminal background check within 6 months of start date, including:

  • 7-year county and state searches
  • National criminal and sex offender registry checks
  • Federal exclusions lists (OIG, SAM, EPLS/GSA)
• State-specific exclusion search for Louisiana required within 30 days of start and every 6 months during assignment

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, signed by MD, NP, or PA, confirming good health and ability to perform job duties
• Fit mask test within 12 months
• Immunizations or titers required prior to start:

  • Measles (Rubeola) – proof of 2 MMR vaccinations or positive titer
  • Mumps – proof of 2 MMR vaccinations or positive titer
  • Rubella – proof of 2 MMR vaccinations or positive titer
  • Varicella – proof of 2 vaccinations or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B – completed vaccine series, positive titer, or declination within last year accepted
• Tuberculosis screening: T-SPOT test within 30 days of start; if history of positive TB, clear chest x-ray within 12 months required
• Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (October 1 - March 31); declinations require mask use

Competency & Skills Verification

• Must pass competency exams with minimum 80% score, including:

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency (for Telemetry, Stepdown, PCU, ICU, ER nurses)
  • Core competencies (Parts I, II, III)
  • OSHA mandatory training
• Skills checklist current within last year and updated annually
• Documentation of orientation and safety manual acknowledgment required

References & Work History

• Two supervisor-level references required, at least one within the last year
• Employment verification for the last 10 years required, including disclosure of any prior work at the facility
• Updated resume covering last 7 years of employment, including explanations for gaps over 30 days

Additional Notes

• No prior travel experience required; first-time travelers accepted
• Floating assignments may include med/surg and telemetry units
