Pharmacist (Managed Care) – Travel/Contract

Location: Portland, Oregon
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day shift, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (40 hours/week)
Contract Length: 26 weeks


Job Summary

Provide clinical pharmacy services remotely within a managed care environment, focusing on Medication Therapy Management (MTM), population-based disease management, specialty pharmaceutical coordination, drug utilization review, and clinical policy development. Collaborate with medical directors, nurse case managers, physicians, and other healthcare providers to deliver high-quality, evidence-based, and cost-effective care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and identify medication-related problems through evaluation of patient history, medical conditions, drug therapies, and lab data.
  • Develop and implement patient-specific medication action plans to improve safety and quality, addressing issues such as drug interactions, inappropriate dosing, adherence gaps, and adverse effects.
  • Collaborate and communicate recommendations effectively with providers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Participate in educational activities for healthcare staff and patients.
  • Perform drug utilization management, including prior authorization and policy review.
  • Serve as a clinical pharmacy resource for healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in committees related to pharmacy and therapeutics and quality management.
  • Support ongoing quality assurance and continuous improvement of clinical pharmacy services.
  • Utilize Microsoft applications to analyze and manage complex datasets.
  • Engage in professional development, research presentations, and scholarly activities.

Required Qualifications

  • License: Pharmacist license valid in Oregon, Washington, or California.
  • Education:
    • PharmD required.
    • PGY-1 residency training with at least 1 year of relevant practice experience.
    • Preferred: Completion of specialty or PGY-2 residency.
    • Alternatively, Bachelor’s or MS in Pharmacy with 5+ years managed care experience involving clinical case review and direct consultation.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years in a managed care environment (experience with prior authorizations, audits, appeals, ALJ court hearings, etc.).
    • Experience in writing research protocols, medical publications, and educational materials.
    • Experience reviewing medication evidence and clinical policy development.
    • Experience with population health management programs.
    • Expertise with pharmacy claims processing platforms.
  • Skills:
    • Expert clinical pharmacy knowledge including pharmacology, therapeutics, and evidence-based medicine.
    • Ability to generate medication-related problem lists and formulate action plans.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting complex pharmaceutical information clearly.
    • Ability to collaborate with case managers, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Proficient in data analysis and development of monitoring/reporting tools.
    • Strong advocacy for patient safety, outcomes, and cost-effective care.

Additional Information

  • Rare weekend work required a few times per year.
  • Remote position, Monday through Friday.

Preferred Certifications

  • Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) preferred.
