Job Opportunity: Pediatric Stepdown Registered Nurse
Location: San Francisco, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Job Details
- Work location includes multiple units; candidates must be willing and able to float to other units and facilities as needed.
- Shift options: 12-hour shifts, either Day (7:00 AM - 7:00 PM) or Night (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM), typically 3 shifts per week (36 hours/week).
- Specialty focus on Pediatric Cardiac Transitional Care/Step Down and PICU experience.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Pediatric Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with at least some experience within the last year.
- Experience working with pediatric patients.
- Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with telemetry monitoring.
- Experience managing arterial lines and central lines.
- Pediatric critical care, transitional care, and cardiac nursing experience.
Required Certifications & Competencies
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (AHA) is required for many ICU and critical care areas but not required for PICU.
- Pass/Fail Telemetry Exam on first day of orientation (for nurses working in telemetry and critical care units).
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam with a passing score of 80% or higher, completed within one year prior to start.
- Unit-specific competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher, completed within one year prior to start.
- Core clinical competency modules (Parts I, II, III) with passing scores, completed within one year prior to start and updated annually.
- Acknowledgement of Pass/Fail Testing required for all RNs.
Background and Health Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check required within 30 days of start and renewed annually, including specific county and nationwide checks.
- Education verification or copy of diploma/transcript required.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including physician statement of fitness to work.
- Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, re-run every 2 years.
- Immunizations and titers required (with documentation):
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years, no declinations accepted except medical exemptions)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (IGG titer or 2 vaccines)
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella (IGG titer or 2 vaccines; history of disease not accepted)
- Flu seasonal vaccination or facility-specific declination (required during flu season)
- Tuberculosis (TB) testing: Two negative TB tests required (one within 1 year, one within 3 months of start) or chest X-ray if positive history. Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Fit mask test within 1 year of start, with specific approved mask types; onsite fit testing available as last resort.
- COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required.
Additional Requirements
- Two supervisory references required, preferably from the most recent place of employment.
- Current and updated resume including last 7 years of work history; gaps of 30 days or more must be explained.
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.
- Verification of 7 years of work history required (third-party or in-house verification acceptable).
- Completion of facility-specific learning modules prior to or on first day of orientation.
- Completion of cybersecurity and HIPAA training and quizzes with passing scores.
- Completion of facility-specific COVID-19 questionnaires and attestation forms as applicable.
Notes
- Candidates must be prepared for pass/fail exams on medication and telemetry during orientation.
- Floating to other units within the facility or system is required.
- This position requires flexibility and strong pediatric critical care skills.
