OR Tech / Surgical Tech - Travel/Contract Position
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Specialty: Surgical Services
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule
- Variable shifts available: 8, 10, or 12 hours
- Typical hours: 18:30 - 07:00 (Night shift)
- Weekly hours: 36-40 (flexible depending on candidate)
- Call required:
- Monday to Friday: 21:00 - 06:30
- Weekends: 12-hour shifts from 19:00 - 06:30
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years of Surgical Tech experience required
- Experience in the following surgical areas:
- Neurosurgery
- Spine
- Complex Orthopedics/Ortho Spine
- Complex General Surgery (including Bariatric surgery)
- Required experience includes Level I Trauma and Neuro cases
- Preferred experience in ENT, GU, Plastics, and Burns
- Prior travel experience preferred but not required
Certifications & Licenses
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required
- EPIC experience preferred
- National certification for Surgical Technologists is not required
- HSPA or CBSPD certification required for new Surgical Tech travelers starting 3/28/25 and beyond
- ACLS may be required depending on unit assignment (effective 11/13/25 for certain units)
- Other certifications may be required based on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including:
- Social Security trace
- Counties lived/worked
- Nationwide search
- Sex offender registry
- Motor Vehicle Record (if driving is part of job)
- FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start using specific code (3701.881)
- Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending drug screens allowed)
- Education verification required (accredited program graduation verification)
- Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year of assignment end date; onsite fit testing available if needed
- Immunizations/vaccines required:
- Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start
- Annual TB questionnaire
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer (measles, mumps, rubella)
- Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination accepted)
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption allowed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination with mask requirement during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
- COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended but not required
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start (with remediation process if failed)
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required prior to start
- Unit-specific competency exams may be required
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement required annually
- Continuing education requirements including stroke education depending on unit assignment
Additional Information
- Call and weekend work required
- Parking permits available for purchase (cost and options vary)
- Candidates must review and sign dress code and hand hygiene policies
- Fraud, waste, and abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
- Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and acknowledged annually
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Surgical Technologist with a minimum of 3 years of experience
- Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
This position offers a challenging surgical tech role with a focus on complex surgical specialties and trauma care in a high-acuity environment. Candidates should be prepared for night shifts, call responsibilities, and a comprehensive credentialing and compliance process.
