Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of experience in Labor & Delivery
• Must have completed at least 1 prior assignment at a facility comparable in size and acuity (prior travel experience required)

Patient Population & Unit Details

• Level III NICU and Newborn Nursery on site
• Approximately 1800 deliveries per year
• Typically 4 scheduled events daily (c-sections, versions, etc.)
• Unit includes:

  • 7 labor rooms and 2 triage rooms
  • 2 OR suites
  • 25 beds for Postpartum/Antepartum/GYN/Mother-Baby (including overflow Antepartum monitored by L&D RNs)
• Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby are physically separate but adjacent units
• Rooming-in model for Mother-Baby care
• Large referral area, one of two NICUs in the state

Common Diagnoses & Patient Types

• Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH), Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), Pre-Eclampsia, Eclampsia, HELLP syndrome
• Shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, drug addiction, cervical ripening
• Newborn care includes documentation of feeds, vitals, and assessments when mother remains on unit for continuous surveillance

Patient Ratios

• Cervical Ripening: 1:1 to 1:3
• Laboring: 1:1 to 1:3
• Active Labor: 1:1
• Couplet/Postpartum/Antepartum: 3 mother/baby couplets or 3 Antepartum/NICU moms

Required Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN): BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM), Management of Obstetric Emergencies and Acute Bleeding (MOAB)
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST): BLS, nationally certified CST (if applicable)

Required Skills

• Titration of Pitocin
• Use of fetal scalp electrodes
• Performing cervical exams
• Assisting CRNA with epidural placement
• Management of insulin and magnesium drips
• Handling shoulder dystocia emergencies
• Circulating in c-section and/or receiving baby in OR
• Neonatal resuscitation
• Assisting with placement and monitoring of intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC)
• Newborn care including lactation support and safe skin-to-skin protocols
• Charge nurse experience is requested to be noted if applicable

Support on Unit

• Unit secretary (dayshift only)
• Bed flow facilitator (dayshift only)
• CST available 24/7
• Charge nurse coverage 24/7
• Phlebotomist for lab draws after IV placement
• Anesthesia available 24/7
• House supervisor 24/7
• Respiratory therapist 24/7
• OB provider on call 24/7
• Family medicine residents with attending backup in-house 24/7
• Certified midwife may be on call with backup for operative deliveries
• RN available to catch baby/provide delivery care
• Remote fetal monitoring at bedside and nurse’s station

Technology & Equipment

• Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner
• Fetal monitoring system: Fetal Link
• IV pumps: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis

Floating

• May float to Mother-Baby unit (Antepartum, Postpartum, or occasionally Mother-Baby)
• Newborn Nursery RN handles 24-hour labs

Orientation

• 1 day HR/preceptor orientation
• 1 day OR training/PACU
• 1 day preceptor orientation on night shift if contracted to nights

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: work at least 4 out of 8 weekend shifts (may be back-to-back)
• No mandatory call; call pick-up may be available
• Holiday rotation required
• Manager approval required for time off
• Shift times:

  • 0700-1930 (day shift)
  • 1900-0730 (night shift)
