Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Option for 36 or 48-hour shifts and 13 or 26 week contract lengths.
  • Frequent floating required to meet hospital staffing needs; travelers are the first to float.
  • Unit is a 20-bed general medical surgical and telemetry unit including orthopedic patients.
  • Patient population includes total knee and hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases, pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
  • The unit is split floors:
    • 7th floor includes medical/surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia) and is a secured floor.
    • Travelers receive training for safety and de-escalation and must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Days: 1:5
    • Nights: 1:6 (can rarely be 1:7)
  • Drip medication administration required on all floors.
  • EPIC charting experience required.
  • Must be prepared to float within scope to other units as needed.
  • Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period.
  • Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
  • Facility is 100% nicotine free.
  • Scrubs are mandatory (specific color and style required).
  • Parking permits available for a monthly fee or daily parking options.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
  • First-time travelers not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS and CPI certifications preferred.
  • Experience with drips and EPIC electronic medical records required.
  • Comfortable and trained in managing behavioral health patients.
  • Must be willing and able to float frequently.
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required, but first-time travelers generally not accepted unless meeting experience criteria.

Certifications & Compliance

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) preferred.
  • Other certifications as applicable per unit description.

Additional Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including nationwide and federal checks.
  • Ongoing monthly SAM and OIG checks.
  • Education verification required.
  • State-specific registry checks required.
  • Drug screening within 60 days of start and updated annually.
  • Physical exam and fit mask test required within 1 year of start and updated annually.
  • Immunizations and health documents required, including:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • Varicella vaccination or positive titer
  • Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory.
  • COVID vaccine preferred; exemptions accepted.
  • Annual skills checklist required.
  • Two professional references from the past 2 years required.

Work Environment & Notes

  • Floating may include multiple units beyond the primary assignment.
  • Safety training and de-escalation training provided for behavioral health patient care.
  • Facility enforces a strict nicotine-free policy.
  • Scrubs with specific branding required.
  • Parking available with permit or daily rates.
  • RTO (Request Time Off) blackout dates apply during certain events.
  • RTO requests limited to two weeks and require manager approval after confirmation.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with medical-surgical and telemetry care, including behavioral health patients, who are flexible with floating and working holidays and weekends.

Ethics are questionable at best, M/S unit demands higher acuity of care than most hospitals M/S units; a lot of the nurses are inexperienced.
