Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical - Neuro)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Work option: 36 or 48-hour shifts
• Specialty: Mixed Acuity (Medical Surgical/Telemetry & Stepdown)
• Unit: 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
• Patient population includes strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain/spinal cord tumors, and other neurological conditions
• Care for up to five Med Surg patients per RN
• Ratios:

  • Med Surg/Telemetry: 1:5 (days), 1:6 (nights), occasionally 1:7 nights
  • Stepdown: 1:3-4 (days and nights)
• Drip infusions required on all floors
• EPIC charting experience required
• Floating required frequently, including to multiple units and potentially to Bellevue campus
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days or nights)
• Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
• No local candidates accepted (must live more than 100 miles away)
• 100% nicotine-free facility
• Scrubs: Mandatory Steele gray scrubs with facility logo

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital (higher experience requirement confirmed)
• First-time travelers NOT accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
• Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required
• Licensure: Valid RN license for Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start)
• Certifications (as applicable):

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Additional certifications/competencies as required by unit (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification, Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam)

Additional Requirements

• Must be prepared to float within scope to meet staffing needs
• Background check, drug screening, and various health documents required prior to start and updated annually
• Immunizations and health screenings required:

  • Tdap/Tetanus vaccine within last 10 years
  • Annual PPD or equivalent TB screening
  • MMR (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B titer or declination
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
  • COVID vaccine preferred (exemptions accepted)
• Physical exam and fit mask test required annually
• Must submit requests for time off (RTO) with application; up to two weeks permitted
• Must wear facility-specific scrubs (provided or purchased)
• Parking available with permit or daily rate

Work Environment

• Multi-care level unit with a specialized neurological patient population
• Team includes CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs
• Teaching hospital environment with complex patient cases
• RTO blackout dates due to College World Series (June 11-22, 2026)

Summary

This is a travel/contract RN position in a high-acuity neuro-medical surgical unit requiring at least 2 years of experience in a large urban hospital setting, EPIC charting skills, and flexibility to float frequently. The role demands strong clinical skills in managing neurological patients and adherence to strict facility policies including scrubs, immunizations, and holiday/shift requirements.
