Job Opportunity: Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per 2-week period (4x12 hours, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 48 hours
Unit Description
- 20-bed Neuro ICU unit caring for adult patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), strokes, epilepsy, and other head traumas.
- Patients do not go to recovery room post-op; they recover in the unit.
- Multi-care level unit; nurses may care for up to five Med Surg patients.
- EVDs (External Ventricular Drains) placed at bedside; EVD experience required.
- Care for GRID patients with implanted EEG leads to detect seizures (patients may stay up to 3 weeks).
- Drip management required on all floors.
- Floating within scope to other units may be required, including various neuro, trauma, observation, and medical-surgical units.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted if in hand before start; otherwise booking delayed 6 weeks).
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
- EVD experience and Joint Commission stroke certification required.
- BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Certification required.
- EPIC charting experience required.
- First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
- Must be nicotine-free (facility is 100% nicotine free).
- Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
- Must be willing to float within scope to meet facility needs.
Schedule & Time Off
- Night shift only.
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (Saturday and Sunday days; Friday and Saturday nights).
- Up to two weeks of Request Time Off (RTO) permitted; must be submitted with application.
- Holiday requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays; requests must be submitted with application.
- Blackout dates due to College World Series: June 11–22, 2026.
Facility & Work Environment
- 100% nicotine-free facility.
- Scrubs mandatory: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo on back (provided after confirmation).
- Parking permit available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates apply.
- Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Background check within 30 days of start, updated annually (includes multi-county, statewide, nationwide, sex offender, federal, and education verification).
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter.
- Education verification required.
- State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required.
- Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required prior to start.
- Annual skills checklist required.
- Two professional references from work within past 2 years required.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA certified.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA certified.
- NIH Stroke Certification required.
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Color blindness testing required.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually.
- Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year, updated annually (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+).
- Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) vaccine within last 10 years.
- TB testing: Annual PPD for 2 consecutive years or proof of 2-step PPD, Qgold, or TSPOT within 1 year. Chest X-ray and TB questionnaire required if history of positive PPD.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required for low/equivocal titers.
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer; boosters required for low/equivocal titers.
- Hepatitis B titer required; declination accepted if non-reactive.
- Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually (urine panel including multiple substances).
- Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required.
- COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemption or declination accepted.
- Eye exam (Snellen) required only for OR staff (not applicable here).
Additional Notes
- Travelers must wear facility-provided scrubs; information provided after confirmation.
- Floating may include multiple units beyond Neuro ICU.
- No local candidates accepted to ensure travel status.
- Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers not accepted unless they meet specific experience criteria.
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with strong critical care skills, stroke certification, and EPIC charting experience seeking a 13-week travel contract on night shift in a large urban hospital setting.
