Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (ER) - Charleston, West Virginia
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (Emergency Department)
- Location: Charleston, West Virginia
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3x12 hour nights (7 PM - 7 AM), weekdays, every other weekend required
- Patient Population: Infants to Geriatrics
- Unit Description: Level 1 Trauma, 24 beds
Includes neurological, orthopedic, psychiatric, renal emergencies with a special focus on trauma. High psychiatric patient population without a separate psych area. Multiple high acuity patients boarding.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum RN Experience: 2 years
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years (higher value between general and specialty experience)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted if they have appropriate experience
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA only
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) - Blue Card required; online courses not accepted

Work Conditions & Additional Info
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 4:1
- Floating within scope may be required to meet facility needs
- No call requirements
- Blocked schedules potential (discuss during interview)
- Radius rule: Candidates must live more than 100 miles from the facility to submit; 75-99 miles considered case-by-case
- Pending WV/Compact RN license accepted, but active license must be obtained before submission
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation held every other Thursday
- Orientation duration: 2 days (Thursday and Friday)
- Orientation includes Cerner Infusion Management training
Submission Requirements
- Candidate profile with work history
- Specialty-specific skills checklist
- Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
- RN license verification (NURSYS verification within 2 days of submission)
- Social Security Number verification
- Clearly state shift preference (any, days, or nights)
Background & Compliance Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License required
- Social Security Card required (legible)
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start (including SSN trace, counties, sex offender search, national and international searches if applicable)
- EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and National Sex Offender Registry checks within 30 days of start and updated annually (must be completed independently)
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a full panel (no placeholders or pending results accepted)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations
- Annual fit mask testing (N95 1860 Small or Regular and Aura 9205 only); onsite fit testing may be accommodated if needed
- Required immunizations and titers:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (declinations not accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 3 months of start
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titers required; boosters if titers negative or equivocal
- Hepatitis B: documented series or positive titer; candidate can start with 2nd booster pending
- Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titers required; boosters if titers negative or equivocal
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
- COVID-19 vaccination not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted
Testing & Competencies
- Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates (EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test)
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blind testing required prior to start
- Annual skills checklist for specialty required
Facility-Specific Documents & Policies
- Review and sign dress code policy
- Review blood administration policy and reference chart
- Review RN/LPN math calculation packet for medication administration
- Review EKG packet for Telemetry/Stepdown, ICU, and ER units
- Complete time and attendance form
- Complete medical release form
- Complete vaccination exemption request forms if applicable (medical or religious)
- Complete application request and delegate forms as part of credentialing
- Complete WV state liability and time gap forms before privileges granted
- Orientation includes inservice training modules (approx. 4 hours), must be completed 1 week before start
References
- At least 1 reference required from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse from a facility worked within 1 year of start
- Charge nurse references must confirm direct supervision
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity Level 1 Trauma ER with a diverse patient population and requires strong emergency nursing skills and certifications. First-time travelers with the required experience are welcome to apply.
