Job Description
Seeking Med/Surg skilled Registered Nurses for a Medical Surgical/Oncology unit. The primary patient population includes general medical-surgical patients with oncology history. Responsibilities include administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection) and care for patients with diagnoses such as AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, Diabetic foot ulcers, and more.
Shift & Work Details
- Shift: Nights
- Target Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6
- Call Requirement: Must be available for call if called off on a prescheduled shift
- Floating: Required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations (e.g., inpatient holding in the ED)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend required
- Storm/Hurricane Team: Contract staff expected to work during catastrophic events or disasters
- Attendance: Monthly staff meetings required
- Unit Orientation: 24 hours (2 shifts)
- Uniform: Navy blue and white scrubs
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years in Med/Surg nursing (higher value confirmed)
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
- Inpatient experience required
- Skills:
- Med/Surg nursing
- Colostomy care
- Accessing ports
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws
- Peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management
- Heparin and insulin administration
- Surgical drains and chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
- Isolation precautions
- Wound care and wound vac management
- Certifications:
- Oncology Certification (ONC) required (must be able to administer chemotherapy if needed)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- Additional Preferred: CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute), Charge nurse experience, OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse)
Required Competencies & Testing
- Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency testing prior to start
- Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required
- Other competency exams as per facility standards
Patient Care Environment & Systems
- Daily census approximately 42 patients
- May experience higher ratios during census surges
- Unit systems include PYXIS (medication dispensing), EPIC (documentation), and SBAR (communication)
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background checks within 6 months required
- Education verification for highest degree earned
- Drug testing within 6 months required
- Immunizations and health screenings including:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella titers or vaccinations
- Hepatitis B vaccination or declination form
- Varicella immunity
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
- Physical exam and medical release forms as per travel agency standards
- Completion of facility-specific orientation and compliance training modules
- Photo for badge required prior to start
- Confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment required
Additional Notes
- No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking
- Call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation and Do Not Rebook (DNR) status
- Must be prepared to work in disaster response teams if needed
- Floating to alternate inpatient care locations expected
- Must comply with all facility policies and complete required trainings and documentation timely
