Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Redlands, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)

Job Description & Responsibilities

  • Provide care on a step-down unit with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio, including patients with tracheostomies and ventilator management.
  • Manage non-titrated cardiac drips such as Amiodarone, Milrinone, Lasix, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and titrated Cardizem.
  • Preferred experience with insulin drips (3:1 ratio), but not required.
  • Float within areas of competency including medical/surgical, telemetry, and observation units.
  • Use of Omnicell medication system and SBAR communication.
  • Participate in rapid response teams and collaborate with interdisciplinary providers including pharmacy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, radiology, social services, and intensivist/hospitalist coverage.
  • Perform telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias.
  • Care for patients post-myocardial infarction, with feeding tubes, hemodialysis, renal failure, and central/peripheral/PICC lines.
  • Manage chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula, oxygen delivery devices, and non-invasive airway management.
  • Provide wound care including wound vac management.
  • Follow isolation precautions.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 1 year of stepdown experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • ACLS certification.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with tracheostomy and ventilator management.
  • Management of non-titrated cardiac drips including Amiodarone, Milrinone, Lasix, Cardizem, Dopamine, and Dobutamine.
  • Pre- and post-hemodialysis patient management.
  • Renal failure patient management.
  • Telemetry experience including monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias.

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Minimum of 2 weekends per month required (may be more).
  • 24-hour orientation provided.
  • Navy scrubs required (not provided).
  • No local candidates within 50 miles considered.

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Up-to-date physical exam and immunizations including:
    • COVID vaccination plus booster or approved exemption.
    • Flu vaccine or declination with mask requirement during flu season.
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination.
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable.
    • Required titers or vaccinations for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella.
  • 10-panel drug screen including THC within 30 days of start (exceptions apply).
  • Fit mask testing with approved respirators; no facial hair allowed that interferes with seal.
  • Background checks including SS trace, county searches, nationwide, sex offender, and international if applicable.
  • E-Verify compliance required.

Documentation & Onboarding

  • Government-issued photo ID or passport required.
  • Signed acknowledgments for job description, physical demands, confidentiality, code of conduct, abuse reporting, drug-free workplace, sexual harassment, and other facility policies.
  • Photo for badge must meet facility dress code and photo guidelines.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for Vaya.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
  • Work history verification of most recent employer required.

Additional Notes

  • Provider support includes interpretation services, lift teams, pharmacy, phlebotomy, physical therapy, radiology, rapid response teams, respiratory services, social services, and unit secretary.
  • This position is open to first-time travelers with appropriate PCU experience.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.
