Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Night Shift

Location: Kankakee, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12 hours per shift, approximately 36 hours per week

Facility & Department Overview

• Facility type: Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) and Long-Term Care (LTC)
• Census: Typically 80-95 residents; 20 rooms are not private
• Department: LTC / LPN
• Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system: PCC
• Patient ratios:

  • LPN: 1:25 in LTC and SNF
  • RN: 1:25 in LTC, 1:13 in SNF
  • CNA: 1:10-15 (aim to keep around 10)

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Administer IV antibiotics and fluids (no titratable drips)
• Perform patient assessments, medication administration, dressing changes, and wound vac care
• Support respiratory treatments when respiratory therapist is not available (RT on-site during weekdays)
• Assist with feeding tubes, post-surgical care, rehab, and long-term care patients
• CNAs handle vitals and activities of daily living (ADLs), but not blood sugars
• Admission and discharge processes are completed by RNs
• Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds and meetings (encouraged but not mandatory)

Required Qualifications

• Valid LPN / LVN license in Illinois
• Minimum 1 year of Long Term Care experience within the last year
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Work Environment & Scheduling

• 5 PM to 5:30 AM shifts for RN/LPN
• CNA shifts are 8 or 12 hours
• Scheduling managed by leadership with attempts to accommodate block scheduling
• Weekend and holiday work required every other week
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating between units possible but generally assigned to the same unit during a stretch
• Scrub color: Any professional color accepted
• Orientation: One 12-hour shift on the floor; additional support available if needed
• COVID-19 patients are intermixed with other residents
• Use of PAPR and N95 masks as needed

Additional Information

• On-site pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell and medication carts
• Respiratory therapy equipment includes AVAP, CPAP, and BiPAP, mostly used at night
• Physician coverage includes hospitalist after hours and nurse practitioner during weekdays; 24/7 on-call provider available
