NICU RN Travel Opportunity - College Station, Texas
Position Overview
- Level III NICU with 13 private rooms
- Caring for Level 1 and Level 2 patients; currently no patients younger than 28 weeks gestation
- Average census: 8-10 patients
- Patient acuity: fairly low, but must be capable of handling drips, vents, and lines
- Common diagnoses: PPHN, prematurity (25-34 weeks), hypoglycemia, respiratory support cases
- Cardiac and surgical cases are transferred out
- Neonatology provider available in-house 24/7
- Partner with Texas Children’s for phone consults as needed
Experience & Certifications
- Minimum 2 full years of Level III or IV NICU experience required (higher years of experience interpretation applied)
- Delivery experience highly preferred
- Must be proficient with:
- Nasal Cannula (NC), High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), Bubble CPAP, BCPAP, vents, NIPPV
- Chest tubes, Umbilical Venous Catheter (UVC), Umbilical Arterial Catheter (UAC)
- Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW) infants
- Required certifications (must be current before starting):
- BLS
- NRP-Advanced
- STABLE
Prior Travel Experience

Staffing & Ratios
- Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines:
- Most assignments 1:2
- Occasional 1:1
- Feeder grower infants 1:3
- Charge nurse is available and always takes an assignment
- No nurse aides on the unit
- No telemonitoring or monitor techs; RNs read strips
Schedule & Work Environment
- Contract length: 12 weeks
- 12-hour night shifts primarily; may be asked to work some day shifts
- Schedules posted 2 weeks in advance, finalized 6 weeks at a time
- Self-scheduling allowed but balanced by manager
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: rotating with core staff
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating may be required to assist Mother Baby unit with newborn care, labs, circumcisions, car seat studies, and deliveries; may take neonatal assignments up to 6 infants
- Scrub color/dress code: navy scrubs and undershirts; scrub jackets optional but must be navy
Additional Notes
- Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
- Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination
- NICU nurses also attend deliveries and assist with newborn admissions and care on Mother Baby unit as needed
