Job Opportunity: MedSurg 4N Neuro Nurse

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Population

• Department: Med Surg Neuro - 4th Floor North
• Unit Size: 25 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
• Patient Types: MedSurg/Tele patients including strokes, stable neurological deficits, post-neurosurgery, joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbations, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
• No respiratory therapy equipment troubleshooting required

Certifications & Experience

• Required Certifications: BLS (AHA), NIHSS
• Specialty Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume standard MedSurg neuro experience expected
• Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not required; strong candidates without travel experience will be considered

Clinical Responsibilities

• RN Responsibilities:

  • Must pass a skills exam with a 90% score during orientation (open book)
  • Titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and ketamine
  • Manage PCA pumps (common titratable/set rate drips)
  • Some tele awareness required; tele techs interpret monitors
• Charge Nurse: Present on each shift and takes patient assignments
• Support Staff: Nurse aides/patient care techs present (ratio approx. 1:10-20)

Scheduling & Work Environment

• Shifts: 12-hour shifts (0630-1900, 1830-0700)
• Scheduling: Travelers are scheduled; limited block scheduling available
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
• Floating: Required to float to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
• Orientation: 2 days of unit/department-specific orientation
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
• Additional Notes:

  • Mechanical lifts available in every other room
  • Emphasis on hourly rounding and responsiveness
  • Fast-paced unit with multiple discharges and admissions daily
  • Success factors: good attendance, teamwork, compassion, patient-centered care
  • Diverse patient population including Spanish, Karen, Burmese speakers

Policies & Requirements

• Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
• Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify distance eligibility
• Background & License: No license or background issues allowed
