Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown / PCU

Location: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

Unit Type: Stepdown / Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
Number of Beds: 22
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4
Common Patient Diagnoses: Heart failure, Atrial fibrillation, Respiratory distress, Stroke
Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio 1:10
Charge Nurse: Yes, takes a full patient assignment
Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP (RNs troubleshoot)
Telemetry: RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
Drip Titration: RNs are required to titrate drips such as Cardizem, amiodarone, nitroglycerin

Schedule & Orientation

Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (12-hour shifts)
Scheduling: Cyclic scheduling
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday
Floating: May float to ICU if appropriate and experienced

Required Certifications

Must pass a pass/fail exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided)
Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply may result in contract termination
Valid driver’s license required at submission to verify candidate is outside a 50-mile radius
Candidates may not be currently or recently employed (full time, part time, or PRN) with certain affiliated healthcare systems within the past year
Fast-paced unit with frequent admissions and discharges
Successful nurses demonstrate a positive attitude, teamwork, and patient-centered care
