Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery
Location: Kearney, Nebraska
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a hospital with approximately 50 births per month (600 per year).
- Assignment in a Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit with:
- 10 private LDRP rooms
- 2 antepartum rooms
- 1 OR suite
- Mothers labor and deliver in one bed; newborns stay in bassinets in the mother’s room (no nursery). Skin-to-skin care is emphasized.
- Strong teamwork culture; recognized as a Safe Sleep Champion by the Department of Health & Human Services.
- Floating to NICU for feeders and growers only.
- Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts (6pm–6am), approximately 36 hours per week.
- Weekend requirement: Every 3rd weekend (potentially every other depending on need).
- Holiday requirement: One major and one minor holiday.
- Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific.
- Charge nurse role available.
Patient Care & Environment
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Couplet care 1:3
- Laboring patients 1:1
- Common patient diagnoses:
- Pregnancies at 32 weeks or more (earlier gestations transferred out)
- No VBAC patients
- Patients on magnesium sulfate and insulin protocols
- C-section experience required (circulating nurse role).
- Telemetry monitoring via GE system (centrally monitored).
- No ventilators on unit.
- Respiratory therapy available 24/7.
- Pharmacy coverage on call at night, moving toward 24/7 availability.
- IV skills must be strong.
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Nebraska RN license or compact RN license.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or ARC certified.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA or ARC certified.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with EPIC charting system is a plus.
- Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) certification preferred.
Additional Information
- Scrubs provided by hospital.
- Unit staff includes lactation counselor, maternity educator, unit secretary/notary, nurse aides/OB techs (day and night shifts depending on census).
- Anesthesia available on call with 20-minute response time; OB/Neonatologist on call.
- Floating assignments and up to 2 extra mandatory shifts every 6 weeks possible.
Summary
This is a 12-week Labor & Delivery RN assignment requiring strong clinical skills in maternal-newborn care, including C-section circulation and neonatal resuscitation. The role offers a supportive team environment with a focus on family-centered care and skin-to-skin bonding. Night shift nurses will work 12-hour shifts with a moderate weekend and holiday schedule.
