Pathology Assistant

Overview

• 6 month travel assignment
• Full time
• Monday through Friday, day shift
• 37 hours per week

Required Qualifications

• New York State license
• B.S. Degree in Biology or related science with certification of Pathologists’ Assistant Program or equivalent
• BLS (AHA)
• Flu vaccine required, no exemptions or exceptions

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years experience preferred
• ASCP certification preferred

Responsibilities

• Assist with gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens
• Under supervision of a pathologist, describe gross anatomic features, dissect surgical specimens, and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination, including frozen section and permanent sections for light microscopy
• Assure specimen accessioning and labeling
• Obtain case history, laboratory data, and copies of scans and X-rays when indicated
• Assist in coding gross specimens
• Help organize and coordinate anatomic pathology grossing for all specimens
• Update and use Voice Recognition templates and troubleshoot Voice Recognition issues
• Assist with preparation, staining, and cover slipping of samples selected for frozen section
• Assist with inventory of designated gross room supplies
• Use the grossing table, handsaw, and cryostat safely
• Prepare specimens for histology as needed
• Assist with post mortem examination as needed
• Download cassettes from LIS and/or print additional cassettes as needed
• Enter required information on the LIS, including number of blocks and pieces of tissue
• Choose appropriate samples for decalcification and submit adequately decalcified tissue
• Update Gross Room Manual as needed
• Maintain communication with pathologists and histology laboratory staff

Work Environment

• May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks
• Professional office environment with standard office equipment
• Ability to use equipment associated with a laboratory position
• Ability to greet and direct staff, visitors, and callers
• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods
• Ability to move about the office frequently
