Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical (Travel)
Location: Evansville, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week (48 hours accepted upon request)
Job Description
- Work in an Ortho Neuro Trauma Care Center on a 44-bed unit.
- Patient population includes trauma, orthopedic (e.g., broken hip/femur), and neurological cases (scheduled neck/back, spine/rib fractures).
- Float requirements include first to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within the same campus is expected.
- Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
- No on-call or call-back required.
- Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires.
- Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
- Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins can result in termination.
- COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change).
Required Qualifications
- Active, current compact RN license.
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including:
- At least 1 full year in ortho/neuro/trauma.
- Experience in a trauma level II setting.
- Completion of at least 1 prior travel assignment.
- Current AHA BLS certification and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Recent experience with EPIC electronic charting system (checkoff class required).
- Strong neuro assessment skills, including:
- Log rolling patients.
- Applying assistive devices (back brace, immobilizer).
- Telemetry/12-lead EKG interpretation (travelers must pass a telemetry test; stepdown experience only).
- Peripheral IV insertion.
Preferred Skills
- Chest tube and indwelling drain management.
- Management of drips (heparin, lasix, protonix).
- Epidural management.
- PEG/NG tube care.
- Buck’s traction and pin site care.
- On-Q pain management system.
- CIWA/BH protocol familiarity.
- Wound care including packing and wound vacs.
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
- Ability to manage change well; resilient and hardworking.
- Social and team-oriented attitude.
Unit Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratio:
- Days: 1:3-5
- Nights: 1:4-7 (Charge nurse takes patients on nights, rarely on days)
- Staff and leadership are supportive of travelers.
- Manager has been on the unit since 2017.
Additional Notes
- Orientation occurs bi-weekly starting 6/1.
- Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
- GSA hours are not guaranteed during orientation week.
- Local candidates within 40 miles are not considered.
