ICU RN Position - Kearney, Nebraska

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Department & Unit Details

• Unit: ICU
• Number of Beds: 33 beds (average daily census: 16)
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
• Common Patient Diagnoses/Types:

  • Trauma
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Overdose/substance abuse
  • Adult sepsis
  • Post-stent and pacemaker placement
  • Stroke
  • Vascular cases
  • Renal failure
  • Heart failure
  • Respiratory distress

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Clinical Responsibilities

• RNs are required to titrate drips, including:

  • Cardiac drips
  • Insulin
  • Sedation
• Respiratory Therapy Equipment:

  • RNs troubleshoot devices ranging from nasal cannula to ventilators
• Monitor/Telemetry:

  • RNs must read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (GE monitors)
  • Telemetry techs provide oversight

Staffing Support

• Nurse Aides available based on census; assist with 1:1 patient care or floor support
• Healthcare Support Tech present 3 days per week (Monday-Friday, 0800-1630)

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift Times:

  • Day: 0630-1830
  • Night: 1830-0630
• Scheduling:

  • Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers
  • Block scheduling generally not approved except possibly weekends only
  • Duo scheduling or shared carpool schedules are not accepted
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Minimum of 2 holidays during contract
• Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
• Return to Orientation (RTO): Required within 7 days or less for 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved

Additional Requirements & Policies

• Driver’s license required at submission to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius
• Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
• Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
• RN Exam: Pass/fail exam during orientation (Wednesdays), open book with resources provided; must score 90% or higher or contract will be terminated
• Floating: Typically to Progressive Care Unit (PCU), occasionally MedSurg with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5
