ICU Float Pool Nurse (Colorado, Centennial)

Position Overview

  • Specialty: ICU Float Pool (MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU combination)
  • Location: Centennial, Colorado (Zone 1 - 60 mile radius float zone)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 7am-7pm (12-hour shifts)
  • Schedule: Set by leadership for 6 weeks at a time; flexibility required to fill scheduling gaps
  • Weekend Requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
  • Holiday Requirement: May be required to participate in holiday rotation
  • Call/Standby: Rare, only for low census situations

Key Responsibilities

  • Float throughout the entire 60-mile zone; no home base facility
  • Float to various acuity levels including ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and Med-Surg Tele units within Zone 1
  • Manage critically ill patients with nurse-to-patient ratios ranging from 1:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity
  • Titrate all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and more
  • Read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
  • Assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management; designated RT may not be present 24/7

Patient Population

  • Combination of ICU patients (medical, surgical, trauma, cardiovascular)
  • High acuity patients requiring advanced support such as CRRT, IABP, Impella

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years ICU experience required
  • If first-time traveler: 3+ years ICU experience plus Epic electronic health record experience preferred
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC
  • Comfortable titrating critical drips and managing complex ICU patients
  • Ability to float across multiple ICU types and stepdown units

Orientation & Training

  • 1-2 days unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
  • Week of orientation requires clinician to be in-state (some modules may be remote)

Additional Information

  • No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs
  • Designated charge nurse on each unit; typically does not take patient assignments except occasionally on night shift
  • Respiratory equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high flow oxygen, and breathing treatments
  • Dress code: Any scrub color allowed
