ICU RN Position - Kearney, Nebraska

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Department & Unit Details

• Unit: ICU
• Beds: 33 total, average daily census 16
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:2-3 for adults
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Trauma, cardiac issues, overdose/substance abuse, adult sepsis, post-stent, pacemaker placement, stroke, vascular cases, renal failure, heart failure, respiratory distress

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Clinical Responsibilities

• RNs are required to titrate drips, including cardiac drips, insulin, and sedation
• RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment ranging from nasal cannula to ventilators
• Monitor/Telemetry: RNs must read, interpret, and document cardiac monitor strips (GE monitors), with tele tech oversight
• Floating: Typically to Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or occasionally MedSurg with typical ratios of 1:4 or 1:5

Staffing Support

• Nurse Aides available based on census; assist with 1:1 patient care or floor support
• Healthcare Support Tech present 3 days per week (Monday-Friday, 0800-1630)

Scheduling & Shifts

• Shift options: 0630-1830 (day), 1830-0630 (night)
• Self-scheduling available for core staff and travelers
• Block scheduling generally not approved except possibly weekends only
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: minimum of 2 holidays during contract
• Orientation: 1 shift of unit/department-specific orientation
• Return to Orientation (RTO) required within 7 days or less of a 13-week contract; no additional RTO approved

Additional Requirements & Policies

• Must have a valid driver's license at time of submission (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
• Candidates cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity)
• Fingernail policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
• RN Skills Exam: Pass/fail exam during orientation on Wednesdays; open book with resources provided; minimum 90% required to pass or contract termination
• Block scheduling not approved except possibly weekends; no duo scheduling or carpool sharing allowed
