Registered Nurse - ICU
Location: Klamath Falls, Oregon
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- ICU patient ratios generally 1 RN to 2 patients; sometimes 1:1
- ICU also manages overflow from PCU and Med/Surg patients at ratios of approximately 3-5:1 depending on CNA availability
- Common patient diagnoses include general medical/surgical critical care, STEMI, pneumonia, COVID-19, DKA, stroke, alcohol-related conditions, overdose, etc.
Required Skills and Experience
- Preferred minimum of 2.5 to 3 years of ICU experience
- Experience with ventilator and pressor management required
- Experience with Impella and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) preferred but not required (low volume patients)
- RNs are required to titrate drips such as Precedex, insulin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and propofol
- First-time travel assignments are acceptable with appropriate ICU experience
Certifications
- ACLS and BLS certification required
Staffing and Support
- Charge nurse present on unit
- Nurse aides available sometimes, depending on patient mix and staffing
- Hospitalist in-house 24/7; intensivist available by pager but not in-house 24/7
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7
- Respiratory equipment includes V60 ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
- Central Monitoring Unit staffed with monitoring techs 24/7; RNs read and verify cardiac strips
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts: 0545-1815 and 1745-0615
- Weekend shifts typically every other weekend (varies based on needs)
- Holiday shifts required
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating required to PCU and Med/Surg overflow within ICU
Orientation and Other Notes
- Unit-specific orientation typically 1-2 shifts depending on experience and prior familiarity with the facility
- Must be comfortable working a 24/48 schedule for night shifts
- Housing is difficult for those with pets; special housing arrangements may be needed
