Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Unit: Intermediate Care Unit (IMU)
Beds: 30 (14 Private & 16 Semi-private)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: IMU (Intermediate Care Unit)
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume standard RN experience for IMU level care.
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required (no mention of prior travel experience needed).

Shift Details

  • 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM
  • Must be ready to start by 6:45 AM/PM
  • Self-scheduling allowed with 4 requested days off per month
  • Weekend shifts required:
    • Nights: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule
    • Days: 4 weekend day shifts per 4-week schedule, plus minimum 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule (not necessarily on weekends)
  • Holidays: Flexibility required, but holiday shifts are usually covered by permanent staff

Staffing Ratios

  • Goal ratio: 1:4
  • Typical ratio: 1:5
  • Occasional ratio: 1:6
  • Nurse Aides: 2-3 CNAs with ratios of 1:10-12

Unit Environment & Responsibilities

  • EMR system: Sunrise
  • Telemetry monitors: Nihon Kohden
  • Nurses must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips (despite Tele Tech support)
  • Must be able to titrate drips including:
    • Amiodarone
    • Cardizem
    • Dopamine
    • Dobutamine
    • Labetalol
    • Nitro
    • Heparin
    • Occasionally Lasix
  • Respiratory equipment managed by Respiratory Therapists (RT)
  • RT available 24/7
  • IV team available 24/7 and performs all IV starts
  • Pharmacy available 24/7 (Pyxis system)
  • Hospitalist in-house 24/7
  • Intensivist in ICU 24/7
  • Residents in-house 24/7

Floating & Orientation

  • Floating required to Telemetry or MedSurg units as needed (ratios up to 1:6 or 1:7 in MedSurg, rarely)
  • May be required to float to Pandemic Unit
  • Orientation:
    • Day 1: 4 hours HR, 8 hours unit with preceptor
    • Day 2: Unit with preceptor
    • After Day 2: Independent

Common Patient Diagnoses

  • Chest pain, rule out MI
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Arrhythmias
  • Post pacemaker care
  • Pre/post cardiac catheterizations (manage radial bands & remove, but do not pull sheaths)
  • Groin checks
  • Overflow patients requiring intermediate care acuity
  • Rarely chest tubes
  • Patients on Tikosyn therapy

Dress Code

  • Navy blue scrubs (top & bottom)
  • Navy scrub jackets
  • No hoodies allowed

Additional Notes

  • Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
  • 50-mile radius rule applies for candidate submissions
