Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Specialty: ICU Float Pool (MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.)
Job Overview
- Float within a 60-mile radius zone around Colorado Springs, CO, covering multiple hospitals.
- No home base facility; assignments vary by schedule.
- Expected to float across different ICU acuity levels as well as PCU/Stepdown and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.
- Schedule: 7 am – 7 pm shifts, schedule set 6 weeks in advance.
- Weekend requirement: 6-9 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
- Holiday rotation participation may be required.
- Rare call or standby duties for low census.
- Orientation: 1-2 days with a preceptor.
- Dress code: Any scrub color.
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:1-2 depending on acuity; may flex up to 1:3.
- High acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella) require 1:1 care.
- No nurse aides on unit except for sitter needs.
- Respiratory Therapist coverage designated but may not be present 24/7; RNs assist with respiratory troubleshooting.
- RNs expected to read and interpret their own telemetry strips (no monitor tech support).
- Common titratable drips: pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and more.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) – AHA
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Experience & Skills
- Must have at least 3 years of ICU experience if a first-time travel nurse, plus Epic electronic health record experience.
- Otherwise, minimum 2 years of ICU experience required.
- Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Must be comfortable titrating all critical drips.
- Ability to float across multiple ICU types and stepdown units.
Additional Notes
- Clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation, even if some modules are remote.
- Travelers are responsible for securing housing within the 60-mile float zone to accommodate floating requirements.
- Time off requests must be submitted prior to starting the assignment.
- Charge nurses are designated on each unit and typically do not take patient assignments unless necessary.
This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs comfortable with a dynamic float role across multiple critical care settings within a defined geographic zone.
