Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Medical Specialty Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Beds: 56 (private and semi-private)
Unit Overview
- Adult Medical Specialty Unit caring for acute care general medical patients.
- Common diagnoses include cellulitis, sepsis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, syncope, anemia, uncontrolled diabetes, acute respiratory failure, liver failure, kidney failure, behavioral health, and addictions.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:4-5 (07:00–23:00)
- 1:5-6 (23:00–07:30)
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with vital signs, accuchecks, bladder scans, and activities of daily living (ADLs); PCT ratio is 1:8-10.
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, and suctioning.
- Telemetry is monitored remotely hospital-wide; RNs can view strips on monitors or computers (Phillips brand).
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated.
- BLS (AHA) certification.
- Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, and chest tubes.
- EPIC electronic health record experience preferred.
- Travel experience on a MedSurg floor preferred; candidates with Level I trauma center experience and EPIC experience may be considered without prior travel experience.
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus policy).
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips.
- Common drips used: Heparin, Lasix.
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each.
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling available via electronic system.
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days, Fri/Sat for nights).
- Holiday requirements vary.
- No call or standby requirements.
- Floating required to other acute care general medical areas such as nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, and oncology.
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts specific to the unit.
- Dress code: professional scrubs of any color; no visible tattoos or piercings except ears.
- Free charge nurse on each floor who does not take patient assignments.
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius.
- Orientation includes 12 non-billable hours; guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
- Call-off policy allows the equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or shift payment.
