Job Opportunity: Obstetric Assistant

Location: Santa Fe, New Mexico
Employment Type: Travel

Shift & Schedule

• Days: 7 AM – 7 PM
• Start: ASAP
• Weekend Requirement: Rotating, up to 2 weekends per 4-week schedule
• On Call: No regular on-call, but may be placed on call if unit or hospital census is low
• Floating: Yes, may float to assist as sitter or with CNA duties when census or acuity is low

Position Summary

An integral member of the obstetrical team assisting with basic nursing care and supporting surgeons during operative procedures in Labor and Delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent
• Certification: BLS certification required
• Experience:

  • One year Nursing Assistant experience preferred and/or completion of Nursing Assistant course within one year
  • Two years hospital experience preferred
• Skills: Completion of competency-based skills checklist

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and x-rays
• Works irregular hours with multiple simultaneous patient care activities
• Must handle emergency/crisis situations
• Prolonged standing/walking; occasional lifting, positioning, pushing, and transferring patients or equipment
• Requires good body mechanics, manual dexterity, fine motor coordination, and normal hearing and visual acuity

Essential Functions

• Identify safety needs of patients in Labor and Delivery
• Maintain sterile technique and report breaks
• Assist surgical team by preparing equipment and supplies per surgeon’s preference
• Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments during procedures
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs to expedite procedures
• Understand anatomy, physiology, and legal aspects of surgical intervention
• Respond appropriately to emergencies
• Obtain and verify medications as ordered by surgeon
• Participate in patient rounds to ensure safety and comfort
• Maintain patient records including vital signs and personal care assistance (bathing, dressing, feeding, transportation)
• Maintain confidentiality of patient and unit data
• Assist with ordering supplies and equipment as delegated
• Report equipment malfunctions and incidents
• Participate in educational programs and in-service meetings

Contract Length
