Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery

Location: Wichita, Kansas
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Hours per Week: 36 (three 12-hour night shifts)

Unit Information

• Unit: Birth Care Suites (separate building from main hospital)
• Beds: 20 LDRP beds, 2 operating rooms
• Staffing:

  • Night shift: 1 charge nurse, 5 RNs, 1 surgical tech, 1 admissions control tech
  • Day shift: 1 charge nurse, 7 RNs, 1 surgical tech, 1 admissions control tech
• Patient Ratios:

  • Labor: 1-2 patients per nurse
  • Postpartum: 3-4 patients per nurse
• Equipment: GE fetal monitor, Monica Novii, Alaris pumps
• EMR Systems: CPN and Meditech
• Floating: Within Women’s units as needed
• Scheduling: 3 twelve-hour night shifts per week
• Patient Care Approach:

  • 1:1 labor support and active labor positioning
  • Continuity of care from labor through postpartum
  • Nurse leader rounding daily
  • Bedside shift report and communication boards used
• Patient Population: Low-risk patients >37 weeks gestational age
• Delivery Volume: Approximately 110-130 births per month at this unit
• Cesarean Section Rate: Less than 10%
• Team: Dedicated anesthesia team for women’s services, 24/7 hospitalist coverage, teaching hospital with residents
• Work Environment: Experienced, tenured nursing staff with strong teamwork and high patient and employee satisfaction

Required Qualifications

• License: Registered Nurse license
• Experience: Minimum 2 years of current acute care Labor & Delivery experience
• Certifications:

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN or Intermediate Fetal Monitoring (IFM)

Preferred Skills

• Operating room circulating experience
• Labor positioning techniques (e.g., Spinning Babies)
• Managing obstetric emergencies

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Vaginal deliveries
• Cesarean sections
• Non-stress tests (NSTs)
• Circumcisions
