Histology Technician - Akron, Ohio (LTA Contract)

Position Summary

• Perform standard and specialized laboratory procedures preparing tissue, biological materials, and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education:

  • High School Diploma with 2 years’ lab experience
    OR
  • Associate of Science degree with 1 year histology lab experience

• Registry certification or eligibility at technician level preferred.

• Experience & Training:

  • Preferred: 1 year previous experience as a Histology Technologist
  • Must complete a minimum of 12 continuing education credits annually.

• Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to read and follow detailed lab procedures.
  • Manual dexterity for delicate dissection, operating microtome, staining, and equipment maintenance.
  • Computer skills or ability to learn lab software.
  • Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with patients/customers.

• Physical Demands:

  • Medium level: occasional exertion of 20-50 pounds of force, frequent exertion of 10-25 pounds.

Essential Functions

• Receive and pick up tissue, biological materials, and body fluids.
• Assist in research procedures; label and process specimens using proper solutions.
• Embed specimens in paraffin blocks; cut tissue sections with microtome.
• Remove excess paraffin, mount tissue on slides, and perform routine/special stains.
• Prepare stains and solutions per procedure manuals.
• Follow hospital and lab safety policies.
• Maintain lab equipment and inventory supplies.
• Keep accurate records, slide files, and tissue blocks.
• Answer technical inquiries or refer to supervisor/pathologist.
• Maintain clean and orderly work areas.
• Stay updated on new techniques, equipment, and participate in training.
• Assist in orientation and training of new personnel.

Contract Length

• 16 weeks

Required Credentials & Health Requirements (Onboarding)

• Vaccinations & Immunizations:

  • MMR: Titer or 2 adult vaccines; no declinations accepted.
  • Hepatitis B: Titer or proof of 3-series vaccine; signed declinations accepted.
  • Varicella: Titer or 2 adult vaccines; no declinations accepted.
  • Influenza Vaccine: Required Sept-April; medical/religious exemptions case-by-case.
  • COVID-19 Vaccine: Fully vaccinated required; exemptions case-by-case.
  • Tdap: Optional but recommended within 10 years; no declinations accepted.

• Tuberculosis Testing:

  • 2 Step PPD or IGRA (Quantiferon/Tspot) with negative results; no declinations accepted.
  • Annual TB Questionnaire completed, signed, and dated.
  • If positive PPD, negative chest X-ray within 1 year required.

• Fit Test:

  • Required for all patient-facing roles; must be current within 1 year and updated annually.

• Health Statement:

  • Pre-employment physical within 1 year confirming ability to perform essential job functions.

• Drug Screen:

  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start; updated annually or after breaks in service.

• Background Checks & Verifications:

  • Criminal background check (7 years, nationwide, SSN trace, etc.) within 90 days of start.
  • OIG and EPLS searches within 90 days of start.
  • Education verification.
  • Social Security Card or number required.
  • Resume with 3 years prior work history including 2 years clinical acute care experience.

• Core Competencies:

  • HIPAA, Joint Commission, OSHA topics completed within 90 days of start and updated annually.

• Work Order Confirmation:

  • Required upon offer acceptance.
