Registered Nurse – Telemetry (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work with pre/post-op surgical cardiovascular, medical cardiac, vascular, amputation, and detox patients requiring progressive care/monitoring.
  • Shift: Day shift, 4x12 hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM), every other weekend required.
  • Float within scope as needed to meet facility needs.
  • Patient ratio goal: 4:1 (stretch ratio up to 5:1), may include coverage of LPN patients.
  • Orientation held every other week on Thursday; orientation lasts two days (Thursday and Friday).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in West Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience, with telemetry experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Skills and experience with IV start, ostomies, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, central lines, PICCs, and drips (Heparin, Amnio, Cardizem, cardiac drips)
  • Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) settings

Certifications & Testing

  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates: EKG exam, medication calculation exam, blood administration test. Two attempts allowed per exam.
  • Stroke education CEUs required annually for certain units (4-6 hours depending on unit).
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification required for ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, and Behavioral Health units (blue card only, no online courses).
  • NURSYS verification and primary source license verification must be completed within 30 days of start.
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start.
  • Competency exams required; up to 3 attempts allowed before needing approval for reset.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations.
  • Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M 1860 Small or Regular, Aura 9205) required; PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
  • Tdap vaccination required (given after age 11); medical and religious exemptions accepted with approved documentation.
  • Negative TB test within 3 months of start (2-step skin test or preferred QGold/TSpot). Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) immunity required: 2 vaccines or positive titers; boosters required if negative/equivocal. Medical exemptions accepted with documentation.
  • Hepatitis B immunity or vaccination series required; declination allowed if documented immunity present.
  • Varicella immunity required: 2 vaccines or positive titers; boosters required if negative/equivocal.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, updated annually; must include standard panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, opiates, PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone, propoxyphene). No placeholders or pending results accepted.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (October 1 – March 31); medical or religious exemptions accepted with approved documentation. Flu vaccine not required outside flu season.
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.

Background & Compliance

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start; new check required if break in service exceeds 30 days.
  • Background check must include SSN trace, county, sex offender, national criminal, and international searches if applicable.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks must be completed independently within 30 days of start and updated annually.
  • Sex offender search completed within 30 days of start and updated annually.

Additional Information

  • 36 or 48-hour contract options available; 36 hours guaranteed.
  • 100-mile radius rule applies for travel; exceptions possible for 75-99 miles with approval.
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Free parking for travelers.
  • Flu shot refusal without medical proof disqualifies candidate during flu season.
  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility.
  • Candidates must review and acknowledge facility-specific policies including dress code, blood administration, math calculation for medication administration, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, and vaccination exemption forms.
  • Orientation includes Cerner Infusion Management training.
  • Inservice training modules (including pass/fail testing) must be completed approximately 1 week before start.
