Registered Nurse – General Medicine PCU (Ventilator Experience Required)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Schedule & Shift Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Allowed 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
  • Floating: Required to float within skillset

Unit & Patient Population

  • Unit Type: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with hybrid beds (10 PCU beds, 2 ICU beds)
  • Patient Types: Ventilator and trach-dependent patients, chronic respiratory failure, DKA, COPD, sepsis, suicide/overdose, renal failure
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, goal 1:4
  • Telemetry: Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Ventilator care for chronic trach and ventilator patients
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Licensure Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse with ventilator experience (years of experience not explicitly stated, but ventilator experience required)
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Drivers License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background Check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start; must cover all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education Verification: Highest earned degree verification required; transcript/diploma required for PCU
  • NURSYS verification required for RN license within 30 days of start

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug Screen: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • TB Questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Photo for badge required (professional quality, plain background)
  • Completion of new hire paperwork and compliance documents prior to start
  • Orientation Safety Manual review required (not mandatory for inpatient RNs)
  • References: 2 clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Employment application/resume required
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Additional Notes

  • EPIC charting experience required
  • Locals accepted within radius rule
  • Must submit all scheduling requests with application

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation and a teaching hospital environment, caring for complex PCU patients requiring ventilator and telemetry expertise.


Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
