Registered Nurse (RN) - CVICU

Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Unit: CVICU (Cardiac/Vascular Intensive Care Unit)
  • Start Date: 3-4 weeks out (based on compliance tier)
  • Shift Hours: Can sign for 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Ratio: 1:2 patient ratio
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: Yes, within service line when needed
  • Locals Accepted: No (home address must be at least 75 miles from facility)
  • Pending License Accepted: Yes
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Time Off Restrictions: Up to 2 requests allowed, max 40 hours (5 days) total during contract

Experience & Requirements

  • Specialty: Cardiac/CVICU ICU experience required
  • Years of Experience Required: 2 years in Cardiac/CVICU ICU
  • First-timers Accepted: No
  • Certifications Required:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)
  • Competency Exam: Must pass Relias EKG exam (Basic Dysrhythmia/EKG competency)

Clinical Skills & Special Requirements

  • Experience with:
    • ICU ventilator management
    • Arterial line management
    • Pulmonary artery catheter management
    • Pacemakers, Impellas, Balloon pumps, LVADs
    • Acute heart failure, CHF exacerbation, fluid overload
    • Post cardiac arrest care
    • Complete heart block, cardiogenic shock, pre-heart transplant care
    • Arrhythmias, ventricular tachycardia
    • Vasoactive drips, central lines, PA/TVP catheter monitoring
    • Dialysis, Foley catheter care
    • Intra-aortic balloon pumps
  • No neuro ICU experience required

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Criminal background check within 6 months of start (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable)
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM quarterly checks
    • HHS/OIG quarterly checks
    • State-specific searches (Missouri Highway Patrol, MO EDL, MO FCSR)
    • Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab units (not required for BJC IL Home Care)
  • Licenses:
    • Primary source verification of Missouri RN license (NURSYS verification required)
    • Pending licenses accepted
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS, BLS, BSN mandatory
    • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, MAB)
  • Competency Exams:
    • Unit-specific competency exams required and must be updated annually
    • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required and must be passed before extension
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Fit mask test (N95) required and must be renewed annually
    • Tdap vaccine or declination required
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Immunizations or immunity documentation for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella
    • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include specific panels and be current throughout assignment
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season
  • Facility Specific Documents:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement, Latex Allergy Questionnaire, Confidentiality Form, Regulatory Compliance Education, Hep B Declination, TB Questionnaire, Hand Hygiene Policy, Fingernail Policy, Dress Code Policy, Orientation Modules (mandatory for RNs)
    • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions)
  • References: Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required for this position.
  • Candidates must be able to pass the Relias EKG competency exam prior to or shortly after starting.
  • Floating may be required within the service line but only within scope of practice.
  • Parking information and costs vary; night shift parking is free in employee lots.
  • Time off requests are limited to 5 days total during the contract.

This position is ideal for experienced CVICU RNs with strong cardiac ICU skills looking for a 13-week travel assignment in a high-acuity, Magnet-designated teaching hospital.
