Position Details
- Specialty: Medical

- Facility: Rapid City Hospital, part of Monument Health
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
General Information
- Beds: 36-48 (flex with semi-private rooms as needed)
- Required Experience:
- PCU RN: 1 year of nursing experience
- First-time travelers accepted with over 1 year of experience (must have EPIC experience)
- Travelers: Must live 100 miles away from any Monument Health facility
- Permanent Staff: Must wait 1 full year to return as a traveler
Patient Care
- Patient Types: Mixed unit (Med/Surg to IMC level, long length stay patients)
- 90% MedSurg; 10% Intermediate Care
- Common diagnoses include DKA, pre/post-surgical patients, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure, hepatic failure, gastrointestinal disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, and DVTs.
- Patient Ratios:
- Long length of stay (MedSurg/NO Tele): 1:5-6
- Med Surg/Telemetry (no IMC drips): 1:5
- Intermediate Care: 1:4
Required Certifications
- BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
Required Education
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing; Registered Nurse (RN) - South Dakota Board of Nursing
Skills Required
- Comfortability with MedSurg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patients
- Ability to read/interpret cardiac strips, manage wound care, and handle line management
- Drip titration experience with medications such as Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasionally esmolol or other antihypertensives
Support on the Unit
- CNA Ratio: 1:8
- Charge Nurse: Yes, does not take a patient load
- Phlebotomy: Yes
- RT: Yes
- Hospitalist: Yes
Charting System/Equipment
- Epic (strongly preferred)
- Omnicell
- Alaris
Floating
- May float to any Adult Inpatient Unit (Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular Unit, Oncology, Observation)
Orientation
- Two days of unit/department orientation
- Two orientation shifts on the unit with a preceptor
Scheduling
- 6-week schedules
- Weekend rotation: Up to 4 out of 6 weekends
- No mandatory call time; optional call for extra shifts
- Holiday Expectations: No RTO requests during holidays; blackout dates from August 1-18 due to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
