ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job – Columbus, Ohio


Position Overview

  • Role: Critical Care Float Pool Registered Nurse (ICU)
  • Shift: Night shifts, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), totaling 36 hours/week
  • Schedule: Weekend nights (Friday/Saturday) plus additional day shifts as needed
  • Float Pool: Nurses will float among various ICUs based on staffing and patient acuity, including:
    • Neuro ICU
    • Surgical ICUs
    • Medical ICUs (MICU x2)
    • Cardiology/Diagnostics
    • Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)
    • Surgical ICU (SICU), Medical ICU (MICU), Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCCU)
  • Float Policy: Must float within units of equivalent or lower acuity

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
    • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • Clinical skills and experience:
    • Telemetry monitoring
    • Ventilator management
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Background and Credentialing Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including:
    • Social Security trace
    • Counties lived/worked
    • Nationwide check
    • Sex offender registry
    • Motor vehicle record (if driving is part of job)
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start using specific Ohio codes; must be renewed if there is a break in service over 90 days or results are older than 1 year
  • Education verification: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA accreditation)
  • License verification within 30 days of start
  • Professional references: 2 required, including at least 1 from a manager/director or formal leadership role (charge RN acceptable as second reference)
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%)
  • NIH Stroke certification required and must be renewed every 2 years for certain units; otherwise, any NIH certification completed within 1 year of start is acceptable

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year or chest x-ray if positive; TB questionnaire required annually in lieu of TB test
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Measles (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Mumps (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B (titer or 3-vaccine series; declination acceptable)
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12; no exemptions if working with infants or pregnant patients)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31); decliners must wear a mask
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene)
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended; proof of primary vaccination collected if available

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code and hand hygiene policy
  • Completion of Confidential Fraud Waste Abuse and Compliance Reporting Mechanism form
  • Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training certificate required prior to start and updated annually
  • Annual orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • Background check and fingerprinting attestations as applicable
  • Proof of fingerprinting completion required for subcontractors (physical receipt or photo of fingerprint cards)
  • Ethics and compliance policies must be reviewed and signed annually for new contracts
