Registered Nurse – PCU (Ventilator Experience Required)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Shift Details

  • Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Either every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks

Unit and Patient Population

  • General Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
  • Care for vent/trach-dependent patients, including 2 chronic trach beds
  • Common diagnoses: DKA, COPD, Sepsis, Suicide/Overdose, Chronic respiratory failure, renal failure
  • Remote telemetry monitoring on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5, goal 1:4
  • Floating within skillset required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)
  • BLS (American Heart Association)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Ventilator care for chronic trach and vent patients
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Licensure Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
  • Ventilator (vent) experience required
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Documentation and Compliance Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
  • Background check covering 7 years of history, including education verification and various federal/state checks, required within 1 year of start
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
  • NURSYS verification required for RNs within 30 days of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible if needed)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or signed declination form required during flu season
  • Professional photo for badge required (no selfies or filters; plain background)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing
  • Completion of new hire paperwork prior to start
  • Review of contract staff orientation manual (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Two clinical references required
  • Updated skills checklist annually

  • Locals accepted under radius rule criteria
  • All scheduling requests must be submitted with application
  • Facility allows one shift call-off per two weeks
  • Floating within skillset expected
  • Telemetry (Tele) refers to cardiac telemetry monitoring only

This position offers the opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation and a teaching hospital environment, caring for complex patients requiring ventilator and advanced cardiac care.
