Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Telemetry
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit & Patient Population
- Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit with 20 beds, including orthopedic patients (Total Knee and Hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases).
- Patient diagnoses include pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
- Unit split by floors:
- 7th floor: Medical/Surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia), secured floor.
- Must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients; safety and de-escalation training provided.
- Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs.
Staffing Ratios
- Day shift ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
- Night shift ratio: 1 nurse to 6 patients (rarely 1:7)
Job Requirements & Responsibilities
- Must be prepared to float frequently to meet hospital staffing needs, including potential floating to other campuses and units (e.g., Neuro, Trauma, Observation).
- Drip medication administration required on all floors.
- EPIC electronic charting experience required.
- Travelers are prioritized first to float.
- Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat).
- Holiday work requirement: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start; booking may be delayed if not).
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
- First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
- BLS certification required.
- ACLS and CPI certifications preferred.
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
Facility & Work Environment
- 100% nicotine-free facility.
- Mandatory scrubs: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation).
- Parking available via permit (~$55/month) or daily rates.
- Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks.
- SAM and OIG checks required within 30 days of start and monthly thereafter.
- Education verification required.
- State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required.
- Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required.
- Annual skills checklist required.
- Two professional references from the past 2 years required.
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred.
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) preferred.
- NIH Stroke Certification, Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam, Color Blind Testing, and other competency exams as applicable.
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually.
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year, updated annually (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+).
- Tdap vaccine within the last 10 years.
- Annual TB screening (PPD or equivalent) or chest x-ray if history positive.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer required; boosters if titers low.
- Hepatitis B titer required or declination accepted.
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer required; boosters if titers low.
- Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually (instant tests not accepted).
- Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required.
- COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions accepted.
- Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here).
Additional Notes
- RTO (Request Time Off) blackout dates: June 11–22, 2026 (due to College World Series).
- Up to two weeks of RTO permitted; requests must be submitted with application.
- Scrubs and facility-specific orientation materials provided after confirmation.
This position is ideal for experienced travel RNs comfortable with medical-surgical and telemetry patients, including those with behavioral health needs, who are flexible with floating and working night shifts in a large, urban academic medical center environment.
