Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PICU

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract

Job Description

  • Work as a Registered Nurse in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with mixed acuity levels.
  • Patient ratios:
    • PICU: 1:2
    • PCU: 1:3
    • Acute care: 1:4
  • PICU nurses are expected to work across the acuity spectrum.
  • May be placed on call for regularly scheduled shifts.
  • All staff, including travelers, may be required to serve as a Rover nurse/task nurse on any inpatient unit, including NICU, Labor and Delivery, and adult acute care.
  • Rover nurse duties include:
    • Patient turning and repositioning
    • Bathing
    • Assistance with patient transport and ambulation
    • Meal assistance
    • Medication administration (within individual comfort zone and training)
  • Scheduling is managed by unit scheduler; travelers do not self-schedule.
  • Minimum weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts plus a Friday day shift (day shift travelers) or a Sunday night shift (night shift travelers).
  • Scheduling period is 4 weeks (Monday through Sunday).
  • 24-bed unit.
  • Facility is 100% nicotine-free.
  • Holiday requirement: Travelers must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start).
  • Minimum 2 years of PICU experience at a Level I Trauma Center.
  • Epic charting experience required.
  • BLS and PALS certifications required.
  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • First-time travelers NOT accepted unless they have 3+ years of PICU experience at a Level I Trauma Center.
  • Must be more than 100 miles from the facility (locals not accepted).
  • Scrubs are mandatory (specific color and style required).

Additional Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID.
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including federal enhanced search.
  • Ongoing monthly SAM and OIG checks.
  • Education verification.
  • State-specific registry checks.
  • Various certifications as applicable (ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP).
  • Primary source verification of license prior to start.
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology testing as applicable.
  • Health documents including:
    • Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
    • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually
    • Immunizations: Tdap, MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Flu (preferred but not mandatory)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
    • Drug screening within 60 days of start, updated annually
    • COVID vaccine preferred (exemptions accepted)
  • Annual skills checklist.
  • Two professional references from the past 2 years.
  • Eye exam required if working in the OR (not applicable here but noted).

Important Notes

  • Travelers do not self-schedule; requests for scheduling preferences are considered but not guaranteed.
  • All requested days off (RDOs) must be stipulated in the contract; otherwise, travelers must trade shifts with core staff.
  • Parking permits available at a cost or daily parking options.
  • Facility enforces strict nicotine-free policy.
  • Scrubs with specific branding are required and provided after confirmation.

This position is ideal for experienced PICU nurses with strong critical care skills, prior Level I Trauma Center experience, and familiarity with Epic electronic health records. Prior travel experience is required (first-time travelers not accepted unless highly experienced).

Ethics are questionable at best, M/S unit demands higher acuity of care than most hospitals M/S units; a lot of the nurses are inexperienced.
