Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Specialty: Medical Surgical / Telemetry RN
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour night shifts (7 PM start)
  • Schedule: Weekdays, every other weekend required, float within scope if needed
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5; may increase to 6-7 patients per nurse in some cases
  • Unit: 39 beds; Cardiac focus including Acute MI, unstable angina, CHF, arrhythmias, CVA surgical patients, observation unit (high turnover, ~36 hours average stay)
  • Patient Population: Adult and Geriatric
  • Required Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • Minimum 1 year in specialty (Medical Surgical / Telemetry)
  • First-timers: Accepted if experience requirements are met
  • Certifications Required: BLS/BCLS, ACLS (AHA only)
  • Licensing: WV or Compact RN License required (pending license acceptable)
  • Orientation: Held every other week on Thursday; 2-day orientation (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Holiday Time Off: Limit requests to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays
  • Schedule Requests: Manager cannot guarantee blocked schedule requests
  • Travel Radius: 100-mile radius rule (75-99 miles requires facility approval)
  • Float: May float within scope if needed

Clinical Skills & Experience Preferred

  • Cardioversion, TEE, thoracentesis, bone marrow biopsy, chest tube insertion, central line insertion, paracentesis (preferred but not required)
  • Post Cardiac Cath, Post Angiogram, PTCA experience required
  • Proficiency with drips: heparin, cardizem, amiodarone, dobutamine, dopamine, nitro

  • Level IV Trauma Center, Major Teaching Hospital
  • Total Staffed Beds: 838
  • Charting System: Cerner
  • Scrub Color: Royal Blue/White (RN)
  • Parking: Free for travelers

Requirements & Compliance

  • References: Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
  • Background Checks: 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, counties, sex offender search, national and international searches if applicable
  • Drug Screen: Within 30 days of start, includes multiple substances; no placeholders or pending results allowed
  • Health Documents:
    • Physical exam within 1 year, stating good health and no limitations
    • Annual fit mask testing (N95 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required
    • Negative TB test within 3 months or chest X-ray if positive TB history
    • Required vaccinations or documented immunity: Tdap, MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B
    • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically or religiously exempt with approved documentation
    • COVID-19 vaccine not required (proof or declination accepted)

Testing & Competencies

  • Pass/fail testing required for nursing candidates: EKG exam, medication calculation, blood administration test
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start
  • Annual skills checklist for specialty required
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification required for certain units (ER, Surgical & Trauma ICU, Trauma Stepdown, Behavioral Health)
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC) — check unit-specific requirements

Additional Notes

  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this system
  • Candidate must have valid driver’s license and social security card
  • Several facility-specific documents and policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start (dress code, blood administration policy, math calculation review, EKG review, time and attendance, medical release, vaccination exemption forms, liability and time gap forms)
  • Orientation includes required inservice training modules and must be completed prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Candidate must submit all required documentation in one PDF including profile, skills checklist, references, license verification, driver’s license, and social security card
